Breastfeeding nipple shields, please help?
I have flat nipples & could not get my baby to latch on, so at the hospital they had me use a medela nipple shield. I tried & tried to get my daughter to latch on without it. She would get so frustrated & she’d kick so I’d just put the shield back on. At about 1 month i got her to latch on some times. Then at 6 weeks I had to go back to work. So she was getting quite a few feedings out of a bottle & refused to latch on at all without the shield. She is now 12 weeks old & I really want to nurse without the nipple shield. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to wein her off of the nipple shield?
I had to use a nipple shield at first too. The way we got off it was that I’d try each feeding without it first and then if I couldn’t get her to latch within about 3 minutes I’d put it on for one side and then try the other side the same way. We were able to stop using the nipple shield on one side about a week before we were able to stop using it on the other side. My daughter is now 11 weeks old and we never have to use one. (I didn’t have to go back to work so there was no interruption in there, but i do commend you for sticking with breastfeeding).
